A Goal Achievement Lesson from the Ancient Scrolls

Recently, during my daily time of devotions I read a passage of scripture from the book of Matthew that struck me in a way it never has before. Something in that passage arrested my thinking. As I went over the simple passage again and again something in my heart said, “Read it until you get the lesson… it’s a life changer”.

Finally I got it. One word repeated twice… one word that is the key ingredient for the successful achievements of your goals. One word repeated twice that is the key ingredient for the successful realization of all your dreams, your desires, your hopes and your wishes.

In chapter 4, verses 18 through 22, Matthew is telling of four fishermen being called as disciples. It says, “And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then He said to them, “Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men.” They immediately theft their nets and followed Him. Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father, and followed Him.”

Did you get it? Did you find the one word repeated twice that will make all the difference in the world for you? The word is ‘immediately’.

Not only did these men take massive action, they took immediate action. Not only is action required of you to successfully realize all you want in life, massive and immediate action is required regardless of what you leave behind in order to get something better.

I can’t help but think about what the four fishermen were leaving behind without a moments notice or a moment’s hesitation. Not only did the four of them leave behind their nets, boats and equipment… meaning they immediately left their business, their livelihood and all they owned; but they even immediately left their families behind without hesitation knowing that something better and more important awaited them. That can be hard to get your head around.

I’m glad most of us don’t have to make the kind of sacrifices these four fishermen did to live an abundant life of purpose and achieve our goals, but we do have to follow the excellent example they set for us as it pertains to taking action.

Some of us may have to leave things in our life behind like bad habits, negative attitudes and limiting beliefs to advance in the direction of our dreams. Some of us may even have to leave behind places of employment, places of residence or friendships to successfully achieve the goals we’ve set for ourselves, but regardless what you may have to do or what you may have to leave behind, one thing is clear... we must all get started doing what we must do – and get started now.

If you really want to achieve all the goals you’ve set, if you really want to finally realize the dreams and desires you’ve held onto for so long, do what the ancient scriptures are telling us to do. Don’t just take action – don’t just take massive action… take immediate action.
