It was Charlie ‘Tremendous’ Jones who coined the phrase, "You are the same today you’ll be in five years except for two things: the people you meet and the books you read". In other words, we are the average of who we hang out with and what we allow into our mind.
I don’t know about you, but being the same in five years as I am today scares the daylights out of me. I am a true believer in personal growth, corporate growth and life long learning. I am more successful today than I once was and I might even say that I’m better today than I once was… but I am not satisfied with where I am in life right now because I know I am capable of so much more. I also know that I cannot rely on what I know today or what I do today to get me to where I wan to go. That is why I have made a point of purposefully hanging out with exceptional goal achievers and reading, watching and listening to positive focused success directed materials.
A good friend of mine Craig Valentine, the 1999 World Champion of Public Speaking often says, "What got you here won’t get you there" and he’s absolutely right.
I recently read in John Assaraf’s book, ‘Having it All’ – Achieving Your Life’s Goal’s and Dreams, that our income is the average of the 10 people we associate with. Wow, that one stopped me in my tracks. I always knew I was a composite of the people I associated with, but I never really put the financial focus on it like that before.
Are you content with where you are in life? Are you satisfied with the level of achievement you’ve made thus far? Are you earning the amount of money you really want? If the answer to any of these questions is no, you may want to take a serious look at who you associate with and what your putting in your mind.
I know a lot of good people who mean well. People who are hard working, who share the same values and belief systems I have and I like to spend time with them… once in a while. These are people I can add value to and who contribute to me, but when I look at their level of success and accomplishment and their level of earning, I know I want more and am capable of more than that. I do not condone snobbery, and being as gentle as I can, I know that I must put myself in the influence of big thinking, goal achieving people who will challenge my thinking, expand my ideas, teach me things I do not know and force me forward.
If you are the highest achiever in your circle of influence… you’re in trouble. Take the advice of the Charlie ‘Tremendous’ Jones’s and the John Assaraf’s of the world and purposefully associate and surround yourself with people you admire and aspire to be like, because it will be just a matter of time when you will be just like them.
